Frequently Asked Questions

BIM is not a software, it is a work methodology.

However, this work methodology does involve the use of computer tools that its users often also refer to as “BIM”.
Certainly, the word “dubbed” can be replaced for better clarity. Here’s the revised sentence: Therefore, there are different software applications commonly referred to as “BIM” that allow various stakeholders to create, interact, extract information, or manage construction differently, based on a virtual model.

Currently, there are few design firms in Portugal that do not have at least one BIM software license, usually either Graphisoft’s Archicad or Autodesk’s Revit.

Em Portugal o BIM tem um número crescente de adeptos, existindo já uma comissão técnica – CT197 –em que a concepsysBIM participa, liderada pelo IPQ e IST que tem como objetivo a transposição das normas europeias BIM para a realidade nacional. The most recent national legislation related to public works also mentions the need for using digital models in the development of large public buildings.

In recent years, construction on a global scale has been reaching increasing magnitudes and complexity, only made possible through the use of advanced technological tools.
BIM is the work methodology associated with the technology that supports this new capability, and construction product manufacturers should be a part of it.

There are different ways to integrate products within BIM software.

The most common method involves creating libraries of BIM objects, which represent specific products and contain their most relevant information. Inserted in the virtual BIM model, they allow you to simulate the final construction, understand its operation, calculate its behavior and installation needs, obtain the brand’s contacts, references, warranty terms, among other information.

Once inserted into the virtual model, they become available for presentation to the client by architects and designers, budgeting by the builder, and management and maintenance by the property owner.

Whether developing BIM objects for Archicad or Revit is a very common question, and the answer is clear: it’s better to provide them in both formats.

Although there is some compatibility between the two, differences in file formats and methodologies make the conversion between them often imperfect and laborious. Converting objects from one format to another often results in the loss of crucial information such as material specifications or performance data. This is problematic for professionals like architects and engineers. Therefore, the safest and most effective approach is to develop objects specifically for each platform.

Both software have strong presences in different markets; ignoring one of them means missing an opportunity to reach a significant portion of the market. Additionally, the lack of concrete data on the number of users for each platform makes it risky to favor one over the other. Developing libraries in both formats ensures support for the majority of professionals, regardless of the software they use.

The BIM methodology assumes that the virtual model is as close to reality as possible.

As it happens in reality, the role of the manufacturers is essential, because only with their products is it possible to execute the constructions. The same is true for the BIM model, in which it is necessary to use materials and equipment in digital form.

Manufacturers should provide digital versions of their products in the form of BIM object libraries, or be prepared to become active participants in the development of the virtual model within the collaborative BIM process.

In the absence of products in BIM formats, designers tend to use generic products in their projects, to which they attach only minimal information, as this will later have to be completed with the information of the product that is actually used. The availability of products in BIM formats allows for their detailed selection and specification in the early stages of a project.

In principle, there is a higher likelihood of a product being actually used in construction when it is inserted and specified within a BIM model.

Simulating real products and being used to develop projects, BIM objects are an extremely efficient way of promoting and prescribing these products.

Being digital content, they can be promoted on manufacturers’ websites, specialized portals, blogs, and social networks. On the other hand, the widespread use of BIM is a relatively recent phenomenon that captures the attention of designers, builders, and owners worldwide, providing an excellent reason to directly re-engage with both old and new customers, or to promote events centered around BIM and its products.
